That’s right – this Saturday, July 2, the Red, White and Dead zombie walk in Fremont, Seattle, officially recaptured the world record for a gathering of zombies from New Jersey. The gathered undead can be justly proud.
The previous Guinness World Record for a gathering of zombies stood at 4,093, and was held by an event in New Jersey in October 2010. Seattle fans were confident that they could smash the East Coast’s record, however, having clocked an unofficial total of 4,233 on their 2010 walk, so the challenge was set – and then smashed in impressive style. The final total on July 2, 2011, was 4,522, beating New Jersey by over 400 dead walkers. Registration for the attempt was also recorded in a series of photos, so there’s no doubting the official figure.
For those who weren’t able to make it down to Fremont for the Red, White and Dead zombie walk, try to imagine a 4000-strong horde of rotting brain-eaters shambling around the neighborhood – and you’ll have some idea of the horrific fun that was had by all. As event producer Ryan Reiter said: “This is popular fan culture at it’s best, it’s the ultimate Kodak moment.”
Obviously it’s too late now to join the hordes of undead, but if you want to check out the pictures then there are already some mind-blowing images on the Red, White and Dead Fremont Zombie Record flickr group. Remember, too, that ZomBCon – the world’s first dedicated zombie convention – will take place in Seattle this October, with full coverage here on CultureMob.
